Eland School: Blending Education with Culture for the ‡Khomani San Future
Eland School is more than a place of learning—it’s a space where education and culture come together to nurture the next generation of ‡Khomani San children. Rooted in the Kalahari, the school delivers a mainstream curriculum within a supportive, culturally sensitive framework designed to reflect and celebrate San identity.
Currently catering to Grades R, 1, and 2, with 48 learners enrolled, Eland School has plans to expand to Grade 3 in 2026, with the vision of building a complete junior school. Education here goes beyond the classroom. Learners take part in indigenous language classes (such as N/u), and are regularly immersed in the veld to learn ancient traditional skills like tracking and dancing—keeping cultural knowledge alive through experience.
The school ensures a holistic learning environment, providing climate-controlled classrooms, shaded play areas, nutritious meals, uniforms, learning materials, and safe transport with full insurance coverage. Extra-mural programs include athletics, educational games, and vibrant community events like “Die Braai,” which doubles as a celebration and a fundraiser.
Eland School also supports older learners through its augmentary programme, offering academic support and homework assistance for Grades 3–9. It’s not just a school—it’s a movement to empower, educate, and honour a people and their heritage.
