We provide ‡Khomani San children with culturally inclusive education which enhances and nurtures traditional values, heritage and culture interlinked with a solid mainstream Foundation Phase schooling.

Situated within the ‡Khomani San community, Kalahari, South Africa.

Eland School is unique in that, although open to all children, it focuses on educating children of Indigenous heritage, who have lost their traditional language and aspects of culture due to historical events.  We aim to preserve and revitalise N/uu and Nama cultural traditions, and knowledge systems, while also providing academic and social support to students and the broader community who have suffered historical trauma.
The language of instruction is Afrikaans which is the home language of most of the learners.

Eland School History

Since the ‡Khomani San’s successful land claim in 1999 the community desired a school which would cater to their cultural as well as educational needs.

In 2015 the school was granted a section of the ‡Khomani San communal land on which to establish a school. A comprehensive survey was completed with every household in the community to make sure that everyone was on-board with the new school and also to ascertain how the community would like the school to operate. The Community felt that school registration with the Department of Education, would also help with recognition for the ‡Khomani San as a people with their own language and culture. The school was eventually registered in 2023.
