A School for the Future: Honouring ‡Khomani San Culture Through Education

Eland School Sign

Since the ‡Khomani San’s historic land claim victory in 1999, the community has remained steadfast in their commitment to restoring not only their land, but also their identity and way of life. One of the community’s deepest desires was the creation of a school—one that would not only provide formal education, but also honour and preserve their unique culture, language, and traditions.

In 2015, that dream took a tangible step forward when a section of communal land was officially allocated for the development of a school. Rather than imposing an outside vision, the ‡Khomani San leadership ensured the process was community-driven. A comprehensive household survey was conducted across the community, gathering input and securing consent to shape a school that reflected the hopes and values of the people it would serve.

For the ‡Khomani San, school registration with the Department of Education was about more than just compliance—it was a vital step towards cultural recognition. It signaled to the broader public that their language, traditions, and identity are living and legitimate.

After years of groundwork and dedication, the school was officially registered in 2023—marking a major milestone in the community’s journey of empowerment and cultural renewal.
